Although we know that Smooth Collies are very historic, much of their history is unknown and largely a matter of speculation. Most experts think they are probably descendants of Shepherd dogs that were bought to Scotland by the Romans in the 5th century! Queen Victoria was a huge fan of the breed and purchased some in 1860 for her own kennel. From this point on they became a highly popular and fashionable dog to own. They are still considered a variety of the 'Rough Collie' in the USA and this means that they can be interbred but are considered different breeds in both Australia and the UK.
